Description: Album with gold-printed leather binding containing watercolors and drawings of travel views in southern Italy and Sicily and Malta. On Jan. 26, 1778, Willem Carel Dierkens and Willem Hendrik van Nieuwerkerke left The Hague for a trip to southern Italy, Sicily and Malta. They were later joined by Nicolaas ten Hove, Nathaniel Thornbury and Swiss artist Louis Ducros. Ducros recorded the sights along the way, which Ten Hove edited into three albums at home after the trip. This first album contains drawings of landscapes, cityscapes, ancient monuments and scenes of daily life along the way.
